The Western History Collections Library has over 80,000 volumes. It is one of the leading special collections of published Western Americana in the world. The Library has a general collection known as the Frank Phillips Collection, plus smaller collection and private libraries on specialized topics:

  • Henry B. Bass Collection on Abraham Lincoln and the U.S. Civil War
  • J. M. Bell Collection on Alaska and Arctic history
  • B. M. Bower Collection of western fiction
  • Glen Bradley Collection of OU Press books
  • Norman Brillhart Collection on Indian wars in the Trans-Mississippi West and General George Armstrong Custer
  • Edward Everett Dale Collection of western history and Oklahoma history
  • Alan Farley Collection of Kansas and Oklahoma history, and the U.S. Civil War
  • Frank and Patty Grass Collection of OU Press books
  • Robert O. Fay and Helen S. Fay Collection on the 1904 St. Louis World's Fair
  • Conrad Masterson Western Ranch History Collection and Study Room
  • John W. Morris Collection on Oklahoma geography and history, and U.S./world geography
  • Fred Schonwald Collection on the American Southwest and Native American art

The WHC Library has extensive holdings of scholarly journals in the field of western history, as well as a complete set of Reports and Bulletins of the Bureau of American Ethnology, and a collection of contemporary Native American newspapers.

How to Find WHC Books and Journals

  • Go to the OU Libraries website
  • Select the "Local Catalog" tab
  • Enter search terms in the first box
  • Select "Western History Collections" from the "Library" drop-down menu
  • Choose "Books" or "Journals" (depending on item you need) from "Resource Type" drop-down menu to the right of search boxes
  • Once results display, under "Tweak my results" at left, find the "Limit to" facet and select "Physical copies available in the Library"
  • The results list displays the title, author, publication date, and call number for each book
  • Click on the title to view more information about it
  • Once you have a specific book with its call number, click on the "Please contact Western History Collections to make an appointment to view this item" link
  • REMINDER: Our books cannot be checked out; however, you CAN photograph books, and photocopies may be made for 25 cents per page
