Industry Information

Finding information about an industry is one of the first steps in developing many business
reports and plans.  Unlike company information that is generally easy to locate,
industry information may be scattered among several different sources.

An excellent starting point to begin the hunt for industry information is to ascertain if there
is an association for the industry in question. Associations may publish newsletters,
magazines and/or maintain websites (see Encyclopedia of Associations). Also, remember to check the catalog for books regarding a particular industry.

This guide lists selected reference materials on industry information held in the University of
Oklahoma Bizzell Memorial Library.

If you need information regarding companies or marketing information, please see the
resource lists for "Company Information" or "Marketing Data Sources." For further
assistance, please ask at the reference desk.

Background Information

Call Number: HF 1042 .N677 1998
Location: Bizzell Memorial Library (Main) Reference Collection
Dissemination of industrial statistics. Comparable to the SIC manual, NAICS reflects the changes
in technology and in the growth and diversification of services. Because many information
sources are arranged according to Standard Industrial Classification (SIC), it is often useful to
check the SIC Manual early in a project. Then, consult other sources in this section for
information on industries and their segments. In 1998 The NAICS (North American Industry
Classification System) manual was published to gradually replace the SIC manual.

Standard Industrial Classification Manual
Call Number: HF 1042 .A55 1987
Location: Bizzell Memorial Library (Main) Reference Collection

number to organize much of the data it publishes. Many business reference books and directories
also use the SIC to organize data. An alphabetical index is near the back. Because many
information sources are arranged according to Standard Industrial Classification (SIC), it is often
useful to check the SIC Manual early in a project. Then, consult other sources in this section for
information on industries and their segments. In 1998 The NAICS (North American Industry
Classification System) manual was published to gradually replace the SIC manual.
