Red Planet
Robert Heinlein

The science fiction novels of Robert A. Heinlein (1907-1988) first gave me an appreciation for the right to keep and bear arms. In Red Planet (1949), the teenage hero ran away from a boarding school after the headmaster announced that all students must turn in their guns. In Beyond this Horizon (1948), Heinlein originated the infamous quote, "an armed society is a polite society." Rejecting gun control laws, Heinlein said, "I consider such laws a violation of civil liberty, subversive of democratic political institutions, and self-defeating in their purpose." Molon labe.
