Intellectual bravery is a willingness to take apart one’s own comfor-table understandings of the world and, in their place, to rebuild something new that is grounded in experiences foreign to one’s biography. For your own good, assume that you really don’t under-stand people, art, culture or history. Then continue the experiment by seeing the world through the eyes of my teacher, folklorist Henry Glassie. Any of his eloquent books will do, but if you think you’ve already worked out an understanding of art, revise your views by engaging The Spirit of Folk Art.
