Books That Inspire 2001

On Violence
Hannah Arendt

The book that has influenced me a great deal is Arthur O. Lovejoy’s The Great Chain of Being. It is a model of a complex idea elegantly presented, and the notion of the world as a unified whole with every being in its right place appealed to me immensely. I could see how the search for grand and unifying theories has a basic intellectual and emotional appeal to human beings. I think it inspired my interest in the history of ideas and certainly in the history of science.
