Strong at the Broken Places

The title of this book comes from a Hemingway quote, “For life breaks us all and afterward, many are strong at the broken places.” It is the true story of Max Cleland and how he came to terms with his life after an accident in Vietnam left him a triple amputee. In plain language Max tells of his shame, his pain, and his struggle. This extraordinary man went on to become head of the Veterans Administration and Senator from Georgia. His story is inspiring in its humanity. Reading it made me feel stronger.
