Books That Inspire 2005

Einstein’s Dreams
Alan Lightman

Alan Lightman’s novel Einstein’s Dreams encouraged me to develop a keener interest in science, a subject that once eluded me and now inspires me. More than a novel about the imagined thoughts behind Einstein’s monumental theory of relativity, Einstein’s Dreams is an exploration of time and its impact on the human experience. While we all sense how incredibly influential time is on our lives, often disregarded is the larger horizon of time as a phenomenon. Rather than using a technical approach to discuss the genius of Einstein’s discovery, Lightman approaches the subject of time with a captivating sense of imagination that enables readers not only to make sense of the scientific foundation Einstein’s theories are based upon, but to see the beauty and wonder science exudes.
