Mirror to America
John Hope Franklin

John Hope Franklin's autobiography, Mirror to America, (2005) analyzes his experience as a black kid growing up in segregated Oklahoma who thrives through education. Franklin went on to a B.A. at Fisk University in Nashville and a Ph.D. from Harvard and a career of teaching and research that put him among the first to analyze the history of African-Americans in the United States. Never daunted by irrational discrimination, he displays bitterness but also understanding of earlier attitudes. And he remains indomitably upbeat about the future of our country and its promise of full equality.
