They Fought Like Demons: women soldiers in the American Civil War
DeAnne Blanton

As an Army Reservist, They Fought Like Demons is an inspiration because it documents the forgotten historical role of women in military history. Hundreds of women defied Victorian roles to fight beside men in the Civil War. Many achieved rank as sergeants and officers, proving their worth. Most documented cases were women discovered by chance, not incompetence. More importantly, this book dispels the myth that they were mostly crazy, prostitutes, or lesbians (stereotypes modern military women still fight). Their motives were varied, but they all had something in common: patriotism and courage. I am proud to follow in their footsteps.
