Books That Inspire 2005

States of Emergency: documentaries, wars, democracies
Patricia R. Zimmermann

I like books that tell me something counterintuitive about the world. States of Emergency does just that with our current media environment: it shows how in an era of media proliferation (more cable, more satellite, more Internet), we actually are seeing much less of reality. It's a terrifying prospect, and in its defense of truly independent voices in the media, this book reads like Tom Paine for the electronic age.
