Crazy Horse: the Strange Man of the Oglalas
Mari Sandoz

I first encountered Mari Sandoz’s classic biography, Crazy Horse: the Strange Man of the Oglalas, as an undergraduate. Sandoz grew up in the Sand Hills of Nebraska and she knew many of the old Indians and their buffalo stories. I was taken in by the brilliance of her narrative, so carefully written and rewritten to conform to the authentic cadences of the Lakota oral tradition. More significantly, her account captured the point of view of the Oglalas themselves. Crazy Horse altered my perceptions and left me with a deep and abiding interest in the history of American Indians.
