Red Dirt: Growing Up Okie brought memories of stories told me by my four grandparents, who came to western Oklahoma shortly before and after statehood. I truly understood almost every word because of the similar stories that I had heard as a child about early life in western Oklahoma. This book about rural and small-town western Oklahoma tells the story of hard work, community values, and struggles that many faced growing up "dirt poor." To read this book is to understand how different ethnic groups and hard working people contributed to the Oklahoma we know today and appreciate so much.
