Books That Inspire 2009

The Travels of Monarch X
Ross E. Hutchins

The Travels of Monarch X, by Ross Hutchins, was one of the books I loved most as a boy. I read it over and over and still have my original copy. It was wonderfully illustrated and documented an amazing experience--the journey undertaken by such a fragile and beautiful creature as the butterfly all the way from the northeast United States or Canada to Mexico. It provided a fascinating entry into the life sciences and a wonderful way to introduce a small child to some of the wonders of the natural world. This book was a prime inspiration for me to undertake a career as a science educator.
