Crossing to SafetyWallace Stegner
"I could give all to Time except – except What I myself have held. But why declare The things forbidden that while the Customs slept I have crossed to Safety with? For I am There And what I would not part with I have kept," writes Robert Frost. Crossing to Safety is the story of friendship between two couples that endures, and grows, through bad times (it begins during the depression) and better times. The story includes wonderful and sympathetic characters, but the star of the novel is the friendship itself. As one member of the foursome is dying, the narrator looks back and reflects on the events that brought them together, the ties of a lifetime of affection, exasperation, dreams, and reality.
