Bang the Drum SlowlyMark Harris
Bang the Drum Slowly, by Mark Harris, is a novel that I received as a gift when I was twelve years old. Over the years I have reread it six or seven times. It has always had value for me and it has always been entertaining. It could be called a very funny book about a very sad story, but it is really about the respect that people may, or may not, extend to one another. It is also about the human desire to belong. In almost twenty-five years of working with college students, I have seen how people who are treated with respect and who feel as though they belong to something can flourish.
