Books That Inspire 2003

Prodigal Summer
Barbara Kingsolver

For me, the book Prodigal Summer was all about balance. The first lessons were about damage done to an environment when a predator is eliminated from an area. When a bobcat family returns to the region there is hope that it will restore stability to the endangered birds and mammals, overgrazed plants, and river creatures.

Other lessons dealt with organic gardening. Through the use of companion planting and natural pesticides the reader sees how plants and insects can maintain a healthy balance.

In addition to an increased awareness of the environment, the book helped me to see that we each can make a difference.
