Books That Inspire 2011

The Water is Wide
Pat Conroy

The Water is Wide is Pat Conroy's autobiographical novel about his two years on South Carolina's Yamacraw Island, educating impoverished children and battling the authority that hindered him from effectively doing his job. Not long after meeting the author at a writer's conference in 2006, I read this novel and, as an English teacher myself, was inspired by his use of unconventional teaching methods and his determination to reach those students in spite of the obstacles he faced. As I continue to educate both as an advisor and a teacher, I still find Conroy's lessons to be an inspiration.
