Beloved: A NovelToni Morrison
In 2000, the New York Times listed Morrison's novel Beloved Number One among the Top 25 works of fiction in the U.S. since 1975. I agree.
Morrison's tale of Baby Suggs's haunting of Seth, the tortured slave who would see her child dead rather than sold, makes me know how privileged we are to be on the planet when this literary master is writing. Morrison's poetic language seems to well up from an ancient unconscious and sing out narratives and images that echo with human struggles and desires. Always lyrical, always passionate, ever haunting: Morrison is indeed Shakespeare's sister.
