The Pillars of the EarthKen Follett
The Pillars of the Earth, by Ken Follett, has everything you would hope to find in a modern classic. It is thoughtfully written with well developed characters; however, it is the plot, thick and great, that makes it a wonderful novel. Follett is able to take his reader deep into 13th Century England when life was challenging and individuals were defined by their character of being. Follett moves his reader to appreciate architecture, taking them from the Romanesque to Gothic ways of cathedral design via vivid description and beautiful language. The Pillars of the Earth was a labor of love for Follett, not like his traditional thriller novels, it was never printed in a hardback version as sales of the book were anticipated to be low. Instead The Pillars of the Earth has sold 15,000,000 since the original printing in 1989, placing it in the top 100 books ever printed.
