Books That Inspire 2003

Fast Food Nation
Eric Schlosser

Fast Food Nation inspired more than just healthier food choices. In an unexpected way, it inspired me to be more involved in my community. Blinded by a fast-paced, impersonal world of ATMs, e-mail, and cavernous one-stop shopping complexes, I recognized that I no longer held personal relationships with merchants in my community. Fast Food Nation inspired me to walk into my bank and speak to the tellers, to write letters instead of e-mail and to discover and patronize “Mom and Pop” restaurants and shops. I feel like I am becoming a part of my community.
