Books That Inspire 2012

Off on a Comet
Jules Verne

As a sixth grader, I was amazed by the leaps of imagination Jules Verne took that transcended both time and space (in this case, literally!) when I read the translation of Off on a Comet. It features an ensemble cast of characters from different European countries that live on a comet for two years and zoom through the solar system against all odds.

A modicum of gratitude is due to B. R. Bhagwat, who translated this into Marathi, as he showed great sense in smoothing the rough edges of this saga to make it politically correct for a young reader without compromising its integrity.
