Books That Inspire 2013

Rifles for Watie
Harold Keith

Newbery Medal (1958).

Rifles for Watie was written by Harold Keith in 1957 and won the Newbery Medal in 1958. I first read Rifles in 1972, when I was in the fifth grade. I credit this book for my love of history, and especially Oklahoma history. I have read it numerous times, as recently as last year. I have visited many of the places through which Jeff Bussey, the main character, traveled during his time of service on both sides of the Civil War. It is a story of war and adventure, with a little bit of romance, and is one of my all-time favorite books.
