Nebula Award for Best Novel (1965) and Hugo Award for Best Novel (1966).
Dune by Frank Herbert is my award-winning book that inspired me. The book is an amazing story of intrigue and politics in the known-universe future. The book inspired me to become excited about ecology. Herbert invents a planet whose complex ecology drives the story. The fremen must learn to adapt to the ecology of the planet in order to survive and preserve the most precious substance in the universe--melange, the spice that confers long life and is necessary for interplanetary travel. By understanding the ecology, Paul Atreides, the hero of the story, is able to threaten the spice supply and thus become emperor.
