The Emperor of All Maladies: A Biography of Cancer
Pulitzer Prize for General Nonfiction (2011).
Cancer is a disease that will directly affect a few but indirectly affect almost everyone. For me, cancer became real in May of 2012 when a friend of mine was diagnosed with a brain tumor while we were on military duty at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. Suddenly, I became a witness to how cancer consumes the lives of patients and their families. Dr. Mukherjee does an excellent job combining the history of medical research into the identification and treatment of cancer while mixing in real human stories of struggle and survival. My friend is winning his battle against cancer; but as this book shows, the war is far from over.
