Books That Inspire 2003

Framework for Understanding Poverty
Ruby Payne

Yes, it’s true. A video inspired me to read a book. I attended a workshop for volunteer tutors that featured a video of Dr. Ruby Payne, author of A Framework for Understanding Poverty. After listening to her warm, humorous, and knowledgeable insights into the culture of children growing up in poverty, I had to read the book. Schools operate from middle-class norms with hidden rules. Children from poverty come to school with a completely different set of hidden rules. What an eye opener! The book provides insightful stories, research, and practical techniques. It should be on a required reading list for teachers.
