So Rugged and Mountainous: Blazing the Trails to Oregon and California 1812-1848Will Bagley
Western Heritage Award for Nonfiction (2011).
Having hiked with my son numerous times in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains of New Mexico, I am always fascinated by the terrain and inspired by the stories of the men and women who, for various personal and economic reasons, made that long and dangerous trek to California and Oregon crossing the same mountains where we hike. This book captures that early period in western lore of the adventurers that saw those rugged mountains but continued by foot, horseback, and wagon to a new life in the west. The story of the overland route and those that made the epic journey west is an important part of the American experience.
