Books That Inspire 2002

Invisible Man
Ralph Ellison

This book prompted a feeling of commonality more so than one of inspiration for me. I grew up in an educationally deprived environment from kindergarten through high school that did not nurture my spirit, acknowledge my presence as a body, or encourage my intellectual potential due to the racial and class consciousness of the times. Through Ellison's fiction I found truth. His creative prose is reminiscent of many conversations held in the neighborhood where I grew up. During these discussions the state of the world was often evaluated, and included much "street philosophy" about the plight of "invisibility."
