The Creation of the American Republic 1776 - 1787
Gordon S. Wood

In 1979, I had just graduated from college and had no idea what to do next. At that anxious moment of indecision I picked up a copy of Gordon Wood's The Creation of the American Republic. By the time I put it down all of the uncertainty had melted away: I was going to be an historian. Wood brilliantly dissected the intellectual world of the founders, shedding light on the institutions and ideas that form the basis of American democracy. The following fall, I packed my bags and headed to Brown University and enrolled in Gordon Wood's class on the American Revolution.
