Like me, my English education students today embrace this beautiful book first published in 1938 and become passionate devotees and practitioners of reading literature as a transaction between reader and text to produce “poem” – Louise Rosenblatt’s metaphor for the unique meaning composed by each reader in response to the literary text engaged. As teachers leaving my classroom to theirs, with Rosenblatt in mind and heart, they find the proof in fire; themselves as teachers and their students as deeply engaged readers of literature. Louise Rosenblatt died at 100, still writing, her seminal text in fifth edition, still ahead of its time.
