The Level-Up Club is a community group dedicated to learning more about software development by making video games and apps collaboratively. The club offers weekly gatherings, curated online tutorials, and mentors available to provide guidance for development and team issues. Both multi-person teams and solo developers are welcome.
For Spring 2024, weekly sessions will be held on Wednesdays from 6:30pm - 7:30pm in LL123 of the Bizzell Memorial Library.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Effort Equals Output
Video game and app making is extremely complex. Successfully fulfilling a role on a full-stack development team requires tremendous effort and learning. On top of that, teamwork in this realm often means personally only understanding a small sliver of the whole project while still pouring hours and hours into developing just that one piece.
Work for All Hands
The OU Libraries’ Level-Up Club is a community of development enthusiasts who meet once a week to discuss and analyze what makes a game work, as well as what doesn't work for a game; and if you're willing, building mini-games and starting apps in a collaborative environment. Don’t let your lack of skills or knowledge dissuade you from joining the fun. The Libraries’ team of student and professional advisors will ensure that anyone who has the interest, time, and energy can find work they are capable of completing to contribute to the future development of a video game or app. This can be anything from developing a story, to helping everyone keep on track, to the visual and audio world, and learning about the code that holds everything together.
To do this, the work required is divided into tasks for four distinct roles: Coders, Asset Designers, Storytellers, and Game Designers. Whether you're looking to learn how to tell a story, how to balance game play with story and appealing assets, or just wanting to see if this is the world for you, this is a good place to get started.
