Project Highlight: Room Reservation System

Project Highlight

An example screenshot of the reserve a room system

The libraries have undergone a series of renovations in the last five years that have opened up more study and meeting room space for students and faculty with a variety of room policies. The creation of the Peggy V. Helmerich Collaborative Learning Center created 8 study rooms with various reservation needs. For example, these rooms could only be reserved by undergraduates for 2 hours at a time up to 2 weeks in advance. The opening of the Zarrow Family Faculty and Graduate Student Center created an additional 69 rooms dedicated to graduate students and faculty. These rooms ranged from walk-in reservation to reservable for up to 7 consecutive days with a key checkout system.

In total the library host 92 reservable rooms spread our over 4 floors with a variety of complex reservation policies. Because vendor solutions were cost prohibitive, the libraries lead developer, Tim Smith, built an in house system leveraging the Drupal platform and an open source room reservation module. He improved the code, and added many additional features needed to meet the needs of OU Libraries.
