E-Resources for Sociology

Alternative Press Index is a bibliographic database of journal, newspaper and magazine articles from hundreds of international alternative, radical and left periodicals. Covering 1991 to the present, it provides access to emerging theories and practices of social change.

Index of legislative information, including congressional publications from 1789 to the present, legislative histories for public laws dating back to 1970, testimony from congressional hearings, bill histories, the Congressional Record and Federal Register, Congressional Research Service reports, information about congressional members and committees, and executive documents (1789-1931). Some full text is available.

Indexes a variety of materials from journal articles to fact sheets that focus on contemporary and international women's issues in areas such as education, health, legal status, reproductive rights, and feminism. Some full text is available.

Ethnic NewsWatch provides access to full-text newspapers, magazines, and journals of the ethnic and minority press, providing researchers access to essential, often overlooked perspectives. Subject coverage includes culture, religion, independent press, and ethnic studies. The database also contains Ethnic NewsWatch: A History, which provides historical coverage of Native American, African American, and Hispanic American periodicals from 1959-1989.

This bibliographic database is an index of journal articles and book reviews covering the humanities, social sciences, and interdisciplinary fields. Subjects include anthropology, art, communication, law, music, sociology, gender studies, environmental studies, performing arts, political science, urban studies, international relations, criminal justice, and more. 

Provides access to an archive of raw social science data for research and instruction. As a member of ICPSR, the OU community has unlimited access and downloads; sign up for an ICPSR login to access content. Provides access to streaming video supporting classes in the arts, business, health, media/communication, science, humanities and education.

A digital collection of full-text and color images of rare books, ephemera, maps, posters, slag dictionaries, children's chapbooks, street cries, playbills, cartoons, and other materials relating to the 18th, 19th, and early 20th century Victorian London. This database also includes a chronology, interactive map, essays, visual galleries, and exhibitions. Topics covered include the underworld, religion, women and gender, politics, popular music, urban topography, slang, working-class culture, prostitution, the Temperance Movement, and police and criminality.

Provides access to current news pertaining to all branches of the military. Resources include academic journals, popular magazines, trade publications, and military publications. This database includes nearly 300 full text journals and indexing and abstracts for more than 400 titles.

PsycBooks provides access to over 4,600 scholarly and professional titles published by the American Psychological Association. Titles include historical and classic works from the behavioral and social sciences. Updated monthly, this collection also includes all volumes of the APA Handbooks in Psychology Series, APA Classic books, the exclusive electronic release of the APA/Oxford University Press Encyclopedia of Psychology, and hard-to-find and out-of-print books dating back to the 1600s.

This collection includes over 300 training videos in the fields of psychology, psychotherapy, social work, counseling, and addiction treatment. Videos include interviews with expert practitioners, therapy sessions, clinical demonstrations, nonverbal observation, and in-depth commentaries. A variety of approaches are covered, including art therapy, couples therapy, emotionally focused therapy, narrative therapy, mindfulness, positive psychology, REBT, school counseling, motivational interviewing, treatment planning, family systems, and more. 

This database, created by the American Psychological Association, contains over 900 streaming videos and covers over 245 topics and 100 therapy approaches, including integrated behavioral healthcare, cognitive behavioral therapy, and acceptance and commitment therapy. These videos are geared toward graduates and post-graduates and allow for observing candid, unscripted psychotherapy sessions featuring over 145 renowned therapists.

The Roper Center for Public Opinion Research provides public opinion data from polls conducted by major U.S. and international polling organizations. Roper iPoll includes broad topical coverage of opinions and behavior on social issues, politics, pop culture, international affairs, the environment, science, and more. Questions, charts, demographic crosstabs, and datasets are all available. 

Provides access to a selection of documents that focus on the nature of social behavior and organization. Includes full text materials by theorists from the eighteenth century to the present day, including Herbert Spencer, Émile Durkheim, Auguste Comte, Harriet Martineau, and Karl Marx.

Indexes literature in sociology, criminology, and related disciplines in the social and behavioral sciences. Includes journal articles, books, and conference papers.
